You get a friend request or a direct message from an attractive person you have never met. They are warm, attentive, quick to call you special — and they always have a reason you can never meet or video-call for real. Weeks later comes the first request for money: a medical bill, a stuck shipment, a plane ticket, a crypto opportunity you two can share. This is the romance scam, and it is run at industrial scale by organised crime, often from scam compounds. Here is how to recognise it early.
1. First contact: an unexpected message or friend request from a good-looking stranger, often claiming to be a soldier, doctor, engineer working abroad, or a wealthy investor. 2. Love-bombing: intense affection very fast — good-morning texts, calling you their soulmate within days. 3. The wall: they always dodge a live video call or a real meeting (bad connection, secret deployment, offshore rig). 4. The ask: a sudden crisis needs money, or an amazing crypto/trading tip only they can share with you. 5. The bleed: once you pay once, new emergencies never stop.
These are not clumsy cons. Scammers are trained to build a real emotional bond over weeks before ever mentioning money, targeting anyone who is lonely, recently single, widowed or just kind. By the time money comes up, it feels like helping a partner, not a stranger. Falling for it is not stupidity — it is a professional manipulation of normal human trust.
